Overview
Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) derived from willow bark that is oil-soluble, allowing it to penetrate deep into pores to dissolve sebum and dead skin cells. It is the most effective over-the-counter ingredient for acne-prone and oily skin, reducing blackheads, whiteheads, and inflammatory acne while exfoliating the skin surface.
How It Works
As a BHA, salicylic acid is lipophilic (oil-loving), allowing it to penetrate the sebaceous follicle and dissolve the keratin plugs that cause blackheads and whiteheads. It also has anti-inflammatory and mild antibacterial properties.
Benefits
- Unclogs pores
- Reduces blackheads and whiteheads
- Fights acne bacteria
- Exfoliates skin surface
