Quick Summary
The OTC gateway to retinoid benefits — anti-aging without a prescription
Also called: Retinol, Retinaldehyde, Retinal, OTC Retinoid
What is Retinol (OTC Retinoid)?
Retinol is the over-the-counter form of vitamin A that converts to retinoic acid (tretinoin) in the skin. While less potent than prescription tretinoin (requires two conversion steps), it provides similar long-term benefits with significantly less irritation — making it ideal for retinoid beginners or those with sensitive skin. Retinaldehyde (retinal) is one step closer to retinoic acid and is more potent than retinol with better tolerability than tretinoin. Available in concentrations of 0.025%–1% retinol and 0.05%–0.1% retinaldehyde.
How It's Made
Retinol is the alcohol form of vitamin A, produced synthetically. Retinaldehyde (retinal) is the aldehyde form, one oxidation step from retinoic acid. Both are formulated in stabilized, encapsulated forms to prevent oxidation.
